So finding crash data on my car is pretty much impossible...no video, few pictures, no data. So its nice to know that in the event my fully loaded car slides off a hill and rolls over a few times in the woods, that my car wont crumple like a tin.
From the land cruiser forums (not my car)
I have seen a few of these on the forum and I have yet to find a single collapsed roof picture. Makes me feel a little better.

Okay, so I found 1 picture of a collapsed roof, but...cmon
Someone in Saudi Arabia accidentally drove into a 60 x 4 meter well...mild concussion is all the damage when then pulled him out. yikes.

I want one of those so much...
It's twice as much vehicle as I actually need though.

Nothing to see here just an unmarked and hidden sarlac pit

what does "need" actually mean anyway?

In my case it would be to haul some twigs to the dump site a couple times over the warmer months and to be able to drive to VA to visit my parents.
I need something that can make it up their ~2 mile gravel mountain pass. We generally only visit when it's warm so our current cars do okay, but I would feel better knowing I could get there in any weather.
They have a unibody Jeep GC with Quadradrive, and I've looked at those too, but I like the Toyota better. That and working at a Lexus dealer, I know I can get it serviced easily. Not that those really need it, ever.

At this point in their life, unless you find a dealer maintained low mile (less than 150,000) stock example then they will need work. I was amazed how much ongoing maintenance they need and if they haven't been loved then there are a few biggies (HG/cooling system, Axles, etc) but once you do that its just a lot of fluid, brake pads and grease...and gas.

Yeah, that last one I am not liking. How difficult is it to make something that capable AND it gets decent mileage?
I'm guessing those are mutually exclusive goals.

Doubt it'll drive, but I'll bet it'd still turn over.

Meanwhile, in 106 land...

I wonder how a Jeep of similar vintage would fair in the same accident.

capable with good mileage? easy. Durable with good mileage? less easy. The low revving, low compression, overbuilt nature of the engine means its not ever going to let me down mechanically, but it does mean putting up with horrible mileage. The 100 series are better with fuel, but not a lot.

What years are the 100 Series? Is that when they switched to the V8 and added the Lexus LX model?
Our dealership owner has one and I freaking love it. It's that light green, which is a fantastic color for those trucks. The interior is superb as well.
Aside from the abysmal gas mileage I don't think I would mind the 9-hour drive to VA in one of those.
Update the stereo so I can plug in a phone with my tunes and Im all set.

The 100 series was from 1998-2006 and had the V8, the Lexus model was LX470 (there was also an 80 series based LX, the LX450) and they do alright for gas, 17 highway in the 5 speed models. If you want the same drivetrain in something smaller and lighter (and cheaper) though, the 4th gen V8 4Runner gets about 20 highway. SOLID trucks, both. I've driven my 80 series 500 miles in 24 hour period (8 of those ours off road) and wasn't warn out, they aren't bad freeway machines at all.
